Michael Seufert

I studied computer science, mathematics, education, and economics at the University of Würzburg, Germany. In 2011, I received the diploma degree in computer science (Diplom-Informatiker), and additionally passed the first state examinations (Erste Lehramtsprüfung/Erstes Staatsexamen) for teaching mathematics and computer science in secondary schools (Gymnasium). From 2012-2013, I have been with FTW Telecommunication Research Center in Vienna, Austria, working as a researcher in the Research Area User-centered Interaction & Communication Economics. From 2013-2017, I was a researcher and PhD student and at the Chair of Communication Networks (Prof. Dr.-Ing. Phuoc Tran-Gia) of the University of Würzburg. I worked on Quality of Experience (QoE) of adaptive video streaming and network management for improving QoE for this Internet application, and received the doctoral degree in natural sciences (Dr. rer. nat.) in 2017. In 2018, I received the bachelor's degree in economathematics (B.Sc.).

From 2018-2019, I was working as scientist and postdoc at AIT Austrian Institute of Technology in Vienna, Austria in the Digital Insight Lab of the Center for Digital Safety & Security and researched on network measurements and analysis. From 2019-2023, I was a scientist and postdoc at the Chair of Communication Networks (Prof. Dr. Tobias Hoßfeld) at the University of Würzburg, where I led the research activities of the chair in the area of user-centric communication networks. Since 2022, I am head of the junior research group "ML-based Monitoring and Management of QoE for User-centric Communication Networks" (UserNet), which is funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG) in the Emmy-Noether-Program. In 2023, I successfully finished the habilitation procedure (Dr. habil.) at the Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science of the University of Würzburg and obtained the lecture qualification (Lehrbefähigung, facultas docendi) in computer science. Moreover, I obtained the formal authorization to teach (venia legendi, Privatdozent, PD) at the University of Würzburg.

Since October 2023, I am a Full Professor at the University of Augsburg, where I am Holder of the Chair of Networked Embedded Systems and Communication Systems.

I work as a scientist at the intersection of communication networks, network management, and Quality of Experience of Internet applications. In my research, I investigate how people interact with applications and networks, and how requirements and satisfaction with Internet applications can be monitored in the network and improved by network management.

My research mainly focuses on Quality of Experience (QoE) of Internet applications, artificial intelligence and machine learning for communication networks, measurements and analytics of (encrypted) network traffic, data-driven proactive user-centric network management solutions for QoE and network security, ML-based configuration of industrial networks, monitoring and orchestration of edge cloud services, group-based communications, as well as performance analysis and modeling of communication systems.
